Boat Insurance

By Alison Cole

One of the supreme delights that a person can obtain is by possessing his own boat. It takes us to the past when adventure on the high seas was a real experience and man was the complete ruler of his dominion as a commander of his ship.

At present there are few places where a common man can be master and leader of his own fate, but a boat is one of them. But possessing a boat is not without peril or cost. Boat insurance is necessary for shielding such an expensive asset.

The two chief aspects of boat insurance are legal responsibility, or security and insurance; and property loss. In some respects, they are managed the same way as automobile or home policies.

When an individual insures his boat for liability, it guards an individual against harm to another person's assets brought about by the boat. It also has provisions for lawful protection, in case one is charged for something that is protected under the boat insurance.

However, there are certain delicate differences from an automobile policy when it comes to loss and damage insurance. The characteristic coverage for loss is either 'actual cash value' (ACV), or 'agreed upon' value.

Boat insurance, which is agreed upon for worth, has a money amount printed in the policy, which is the sum, compensated for complete loss. Limited damages are restored at 'for new' prices, implying that there is no reduction imposed, apart from high wear matter like sails, and some machinery. This is the extra-costly alternative to cover a boat.

An authentic cash value policy indicates that if a boat is a complete loss, one will obtain the existing market price, not including the deductible, and suitable reduction for the age and state of the boat during loss.

Inflatable boats will have a logo, decal or other branding on them most of the time. If not, they should all have an I.D. plate or patch identifying the boat brand, model, serial number, length, width, weight, capacities, manufacturer contact info and more. This plate is often located on the transom (back) of the boat. Contact the manufacturer using a Supplier's Index to attain information you may be looking for or may require in the future.

After purchasing your boat, the next sensible step would be to insure it against the usual hazards of owning a boat which include damage, sinking, collision, theft etc, along with third party insurance especially if your boat is to be moored in a marina or harbour. You will also find guidance and links on boat insurance within the Boat Insurance section. Remember that insurance on a boat is not a legal requirement, unlike car insurance, though it may be required if you have any form of marine finance.

Boat Fenders For A Sailing Yacht, cylindrical or spherical?

Thu, 20 Sep 2007 16:00:13 +0200
Is there a practical reason why some cruisers choose round over cylindrical (or vice versa) fenders for a sailing yacht? I have been told the guide for fender size is 2.5cm per 1.5m (1" per 5') of boat length for cylindrical, and 5cm per 1.5m (2" per 5') for round; is this an effective measure? Some sailors also seem to think that suspending fenders from the hand railings/wire between staunchions is poor seamanship...is there a modern reason why this may be true?

The Most Common Types Of Boat Lifts

By Samantha Kay

There are many different types of boat lifts available on the market today. Some of these lifts can be purchased in 'do it yourself' kits others require professional installation. The choice of a boat lift primarily depends on the type of waterfront you live on, the amount of money you want to spend, the type of boat you have (aluminum vs. fiberglass) and the size of your boat. Boat lifts also can be installed with either manual winches (up to 2000lbs) or electrical winches (1000lbs and up).

Unless you have a very light aluminum boat, we highly recommend purchasing electrical motor(s) to doing the lifting of the boat. Not only is it an extremely easier way of lifting your boat out of the water, but also, you may upgrade down the road to a heavier fiberglass boat and it would one less replacement cost.

There are new types of boat lifts coming out every season, so for the purpose of this article, we will focus on the most effective and popular.

Davits:

Davits have been the most common type of boat lift for many, many years. Basically, they are two steel poles that are called booms that are installed either on the sea wall or on pilings. The booms are attached to a base that is bolted down to either the sea wall or the piling. Each boom swings 360 degrees so that should you purchase a bigger boat, most likely the booms can be swung out to still be able to attach to the boat. If not, extensions are available to upgrade, if needed. Each boom has a stainless steel cable (make sure it is stainless steel cable) that attaches to both the boat and the winch.

One boom cable attaches to the front cleat either under or on top of the bow of the boat and the other attaches to the rear. The vast majority of boats require a spreader bar to be attached to the boom pulling up the rear of the boat. The reason for this is twofold; there are two cleats on the rear of the boat to attach and the spreader bar keeps the boat even when lifting and when out of the water on the lift.

As far as whether to attach the davits to pilings or to the sea wall, there are different schools of thought on that. We recommend speaking to the installers about what they recommend, however, we have seen many a lift pull a piling right out of the water while the boat is being lifted. One other maintenance that must be performed yearly is the inspection of your cables. Again, we have seen many a boat lift cable snap and send one end of the boat crashing down into the water. We suggest replacement every four years or so, depending on usage and weather.

One davit alone can also be installed to use as a personal watercraft (Jet Ski) lift. The only additional equipment needed is a sling that attaches to the one boom cable. The sling is a polyester strap with two stainless steel panels that attach to either side of the Jet Ski to lift it out of the water. Again, an electrical or manual winch can be installed and the boom swings 360 degrees.

Final note: There are many different sizes of davits and booms that can be purchased depending on your boat specs.

Piling Mount Boat Lifts:

This type of boat lift attaches directly to piling which eliminates all support beams. This type of lift is great for sail boats and boats with towers. They also come in many types of capacities, depending on the weight of your boat.

Drive on Boat Lifts:

This type of boat lift is becoming more and more popular due to the maintenance free nature of the lift. The only determining factor is that you have to live on a waterway that always has water. For example, many types of canals, at low tide, do not have enough water in them to support this type of lift. They are considered very user-friendly, convenient and safe.

They can support ranges from a 12 foot dinghy to a 50 foot offshore boat. The boat lift is drive on and basically goes up and down with the tides. It attaches to the pilings on your dock making boarding and access easy. Its also modular and portable meaning if you move, you can take it with you.

Cradle Boat Lifts:

Currently there are 25 different types of cradle boat lifts available. They can be either steel, aluminum or a combination of both. They have capacities ranging from 4,500 to 30,000 pounds.

Marine Elevator Boat Lifts:

Marine elevator boat lifts are ideal for extreme tidal areas or other unusual docking conditions. The capacity of these lifts is from 2,000 to 14,000 pounds.

The use of a jet ski or any other personal watercraft is often limited by state or local laws. There may be helmet, age and flotation device regulations as well, so jet ski owners should always check before putting their PWCs in unfamiliar waters. Speedboats and other large recreational watercraft often cannot avoid collisions with smaller jet skis. Irresponsible actions on a jet ski can also lead to dangerous encounters with swimmers and traditional water skiiers. There is also a temptation for some jet ski drivers to deliberately drive through the wake of larger boats.

There are two ways that you can obtain fianance the first is via a Marine Mortgage which is more suitable for boats in excess of 10,000 , the second is via a Marine Loan which is more suitable for the smaller boats or for refitting boats. Insurance and registration of your boat will normally be required by the finance company.

Boat Loans

By Lorna Mclaren

A life on the ocean waves! If that is your dream then you could make it a reality with a specialized Boat Loan.

If you want to have your own small pleasure boat or even a larger commercial one there are many loan companies that provide specialist boat loans to help make your dream a reality.

You can find boat loans for used or new vessels and the terms and interest rates will vary depending on your circumstances and the value of the boat.

It is important to shop around and make sure that you get the best boat loan for you.

There are a number of types of boat loans but the majority will use the boat as collateral, similar to a home loan or mortgage.

Of course, the predicted resale value of your chosen boat is also taken into consideration by the boat loan provider.

Various types of boat insurance are also available and many boat loan companies will insist that you take out their own boat insurance as part of the boat loan requirements.

Don't forget that your boat will require considerable amounts of finance for its upkeep and it is important to take this into consideration when looking for a boat loan.

Whatever size or style of boat you decide to get dont forget your life preserver and have fun!

Boom Brakes & Preventers, Preventing Injuries.

Thu, 20 Dec 2007 16:32:21 +0200
Not wishing to pre-empt the findings of the investigation into the latest tragedy in the ARC rally. But taking a good hard look at preventing injuries from being hit specifically by booms:-

During racing, the controlled gybe manoeuver may be performed many times without the use of a boom preventer - this is understandable. However, when in a cruising mode and when setting a course for a distant destination, is there a good reason for not using a boom preventer, so that if an unplanned gybe occurs - possible injury is averted ????

Are Custom Boat Covers Right For You?

By Charlie Johnson

Sure, there are plenty of generic boat covers available at there. But if you're like most boat owners, you are ten times the nut of the average car enthusiast. And that means that generic boat covers are not for your baby. You need custom boat covers that define who you are and make your boat unique. Your boat is your baby and it needs to be a beauty.

Custom boat covers take into consideration everything unique about your boat - length, width, height - so that the custom boat cover fits snugly on your boat and you don't have to worry about things like the wind blowing the cover away or dirt and dust finding any spaces between the cover and your boat.

Nobody wants to take off their boat cover to find a dirty, and possibly scratched, boat underneath. There's also no chance of the elements such as rain or snow making it's way inside the cover and onto your boat.

The cool thing about custom boat covers is that you can have them designed any way you like on the outside. This means your custom boat cover can include any custom logo or artwork that you'd like to display - something that makes a statement about you and your boat that no other boat owner has.

A custom boat cover is your chance to show off your individuality as a boat owner. Take advantage of it.

A custom boat cover allows you the best of both worlds - showing off your individuality and creativity as well as providing the security your boat needs with a properly fitted custom boat cover.

Besides the reasons mentioned above when your boat is just sitting there docked or in your yard, don't forget about all the possibly damaging debris that flies around when your boat is hitched up and are out driving on the highway. Even the tiniest little pebbles can do some serious damage when they fly out from under a truck tire and slam into your boat.

Everyone you drive by can be impressed by your custom boat cover and you can relax, knowing your boat isn't being damaged during the trip.

Tips On supra ski boat

Most large yachts, 50 feet (15 m) and up, are also cruisers, but their design varies greatly as they are often "one off" designs tailored to the specific needs of the buyer. The interior is often finished in wood panelling, with plenty of storage space. Cruisers are quite capable of taking on long-range passages of many thousands of miles. Such boats have a cruising speed upwards of 6 knots. This basic design is typical of the standard types produced by the major yacht-builders.
Buy a cheap speed boat at our store.

Racing yachts try to reduce the wetted surface area, which creates drag, by keeping the hull light whilst having a deep and heavy bulb keel, allowing them to support a tall mast with a great sail area. Modern designs tend to have a very wide beam and a flat bottom, to provide buoyancy preventing an excessive heel angle. Speeds of up to 35 knots can be attained in extreme conditions. Dedicated offshore racing yachts sacrifice crew comfort for speed, having basic accommodation to reduce weight. Depending on the type of race, such a yacht may have a crew of 15 or more. Very large inshore racing yachts may have a crew of 30.

There is no engineering limit to the size of jet boats, though the validity of their use depends a lot on the type of application. Classic prop-drives are generally more efficient and economical at low speeds (up to about 20 knots) but as boat speed increases beyond this the extra hull resistance generated by struts, rudders, shafts etc means waterjets are more efficient in the 20-50 knot range. Also, in situations where you need very large propellers turning at slow speeds (such as tug boats) the equivalent size waterjet would be simply too big to be practical. For these reasons the vast majority of waterjet units are installed in high speed vessels and in particular situations where shallow draught, manoeuvrability and load flexibility are main concerns.

Buying A New Or Used Boat: What Do You Really Wanted To Know

By Capablanca Fisher

When someone wanted to buy a boat, there is always the same question which pops in everyones head. Should they buy a new or a used boat?

If you wanted to buy a new boat. Here are some of the advantages of it. A new boat will come with a warranty. Therefore, it will save you the headache if something goes wrong with your boat and needed repairs.

Besides that, financing for a new boat will be much easier as you can usually get a better interest rate if you buy a new boat compared to a used boat.

However, a new boat will be much more expensive than a used boat and their value can quickly decreased within the first few years. A new boat also required furnishing such as boat accessories, electronics and all the other riggings which are usually found in a boat.

With a used boat, you can get it at a much cheaper price. So, this would be a good option if you are in a tight budget or just wanted a taste to see if boating suits you. You could also get some experience as a boat captain first in a used boat as you would not mind as much if you create some scratches on the boat as used boat usually comes with one or two.

Furthermore, a used boat also came with all the furnishing which the previous owners would have set up. This will reduce the need of spending much money for this purpose.

However, some used boats also come with slight mechanical fault or any other problems. Thus, hiring a boat surveyor is a must to ensure that the boat you are receiving have no defects in them.

Even though you might be thinking of skipping the part of hiring a boat surveyor, this is an unwise decision as it would be much cheaper to have marine survey than to have costly repairs afterward due to unseen problems during purchase of the boat.

Depending upon the results of the survey, you can stop the deal or use the results to get a lower price if there are problems that need to be attended to. Getting a marine survey is the smart decision if you are buying a used boat. It can save you money, time, and heartache, which will make the price of the survey well worth it.

As a conclusion, buying a new or used boat both has their pros and cons. Therefore it is up to you to decide which type of boat you wanted to buy after evaluating the options you have.

Tips On used sea doo

A major component of an inflatable boat is obviously the fabric. Inflatable boat fabric technology has evolved greatly over the last 20 to 30 years, and now includes plastomers, polyurethanes and other fabrics, which can sometimes be stronger, lighter, thinner and less expensive to assemble than the original rubber fabrics. Of course it costs a great deal of money to develop new fabrics or even to switch manufacturing processes to use them. Many manufacturers, big and small, don't have the will or the resources to do this, and that's why they generally hide that fact by resorting to condemning new technological advances in fabrics.

Hints About hunter 23 sailboat

Cruising yachts are by the far the most common yacht in private use, making up most of the 25' to 45' (7 m to 14 m) range. These vessels can be quite complex in design, as they need a balance between docile handling qualities, interior space, good light-wind performance and on-board comfort. The huge range of such craft, from dozens of builders worldwide, makes it hard to give a single illustrative description. However, most favour a teardrop-planform hull, with a wide, flat bottom and deep single-fin keel to give good stability. Most are single-masted Bermuda rigged sloops, with a single fore-sail of the jib or Genoa type and a single mainsail. Spinnaker sails,in various sizes, are often supplied for down-wind use. These types are often chosen as family vessels, especially those in the 30- to 40-foot (8 to 12 m) range. Such a vessel will usually have many cabins below deck. Typically there will be three double-berth cabins; a single large saloon with galley, seating and navigation equipment; and a "head" consisting of a toilet and shower-room.

A boatyard tends to be used by people who wish to refit or repair their boat whilst it is not on the water. They can also be used in some cases for winter storage if your boat has been on a swinging mooring in the summer. Many boatyards have their own workshops and will carry out repairs on your behalf. Facilities may not be as good as those in a marina, although with a greater provision for residential moorings the standard won't be bad.
