Father Missing Off Madagascar - catamaran Queequeg II capsized!

Thu, 22 Jan 2009 00:32:55 +0200
Father Missing Off Madagascar from the catamaran Queequeg II - This is all the information I have. I am posting this in hope that someone out there will find him...If you or someone you know is in the area, please help! About 48 hours ago, someone on my father's boat (The Queequeg II) hit "the panic button" sending a distress call. The Embassy of Madagascar sent a search party and 36 hours ago they found the Queegueg II capsized. No bodies were found. The Embassy is planning to send another search party but the cyclones are making it difficult. My sister and i are hoping and praying that he could still be out there. There were three men on the boat and all three are missing.

Floating Docks

By Josh Riverside

Floating docks are platforms or ramps that can be submerged to permit the entry and docking of a ship. Floating docks are known as pontoons in some regions of the world. A floating dock is connected to the shore with an inclined surface resting upon the dock on rollers. These rollers permit adjustments for the vertical motion of the docks, which are held in place by anchored cables. Floating docks are often seen in small boat marinas. They keep a fixed vertical relationship to watercraft secured to them, independent of tidal, river or lake elevation. Several of these docks are joined to accommodate a larger craft.

Aluminum floating docks are a commonly acceptable variety, because aluminum is splinter-proof, does not rust or rot and does not warp and crack with age. These products will survive the elements year after year despite the climate. They exhibit amazing flexibility and retain their shape and strength in rough waters.

In a maritime dock, floating docks are used to lift a ship from the water for repairs; these are known as dry docks. This also allows ships to be launched in a gradual fashion, compared to the gravity-assisted launches of the past. Dry docks features concrete, steel or wooden posts called 'blocking.' Conforming to the shape of the hull, these posts hold the craft erect when the water is drained from the dry dock.

Tugboats help ships enter into a floating dry dock. There are hydraulic gates, also called valves, which can be opened to permit the chambers to fill with water.

When this occurs, the dock floats lower in the water. The opposite action makes the dry dock rise in the water.

Things to Watch Out For When Buying a Used Boat

By Jason Albright
Jason AlbrightJason Albright is a contributing editor at Cookgroup Marketing LLC. His background is with lifestyle topics including: Gardening, Outdoor Living, Home Decor, Travel Destinations ... ...

Buying a used boat can help cut your costs, but it is important to follow a careful checklist before you make your purchase. If you are considering buying a used boat, make sure that the seller allows you to take a test drive. After all, you wouldnt purchase a car without driving it first. Used boats are no different. When you test-drive the used boat, watch for vibration. Vibration can indicate that the used boat has a bent propeller or other major damage that is not noticeable when the boat is on land.

Also, test the response of the used boat. Try out the steering from one direction to another to see how the used boat will respond to your bearing. Notice how long it takes the used boat to plane after taking off. Take note of whether or not the used boat slips smoothly into gear. Pay attention to the gauges and instruments during your used boat test drive. Make sure they function properly.

Inspect the used boat thoroughly off of the water. Check the floor for rot, damage or mildewing. These problems are hard to repair and can shorten the life of the used boat. Take a look at the hull and make sure it is in good condition. You can tap on the hull all the way around the used boat to make sure that it is solid throughout. Inspect the propeller for warping and nicks, which can throw off the performance of the boat.

After your test drive, ask for a maintenance history on the used boat. Make sure the owner can provide proof of all of the repairs made to the boat. If a lot has been done, then chances are buying this used boat will cost you more in repairs down the road. Check if the boat is still under warranty. The used boat owner should also be able to provide you with information on how many hours the used boat has been run. If the boat has logged more than 500 hours, youll need to spend money on upgrades and additional maintenance. Also ask how long the used boat has been in storage and what the conditions were. All these factors will help you determine the true value of the used boat.

Tips About sea doo challenger

There is no engineering limit to the size of jet boats, though the validity of their use depends a lot on the type of application. Classic prop-drives are generally more efficient and economical at low speeds (up to about 20 knots) but as boat speed increases beyond this the extra hull resistance generated by struts, rudders, shafts etc means waterjets are more efficient in the 20-50 knot range. Also, in situations where you need very large propellers turning at slow speeds (such as tug boats) the equivalent size waterjet would be simply too big to be practical. For these reasons the vast majority of waterjet units are installed in high speed vessels and in particular situations where shallow draught, manoeuvrability and load flexibility are main concerns.

Strictly speaking, Jet Ski is the trademarked name of a personal water craft (PWC) produced by the Kawasaki Motor Company, but the term "jet ski" has become a generic name for all types of personal watercraft. While Kawasaki first marketed a Jet Ski in 1973, a smaller company called Bombadier actually created a workable personal watercraft in the late 1960s. Years after the Kawasaki Jet Ski became a household name, Bombadier came back with the Sea Doo and managed to make a dent in the personal water craft marketplace. Another popular PWC model is called a WaveRunner.

Custom Boat Covers

By Elizabeth Morgan

Owning a boat and then spending lazy hors sailing down the sea near sun-kissed beaches is a luxury, which many dream to afford. And if you are the lucky owner of one such boat, fitted with all accessories, and designed to sail you away from the daily cares, do remember to give a thought to its well- keep and maintenance.

Boats, like all organisms living or non- living are subject to the vagaries of nature. Time will take its toll and your much prized possession can lose both its shine and value.

One of the most important aspects of keeping your boat spic and span, shining and new is to give attention to boat covers. They play a pivotal role in keeping dust, snow, rain or mildew at bay. All these are sources of corrosion and can affect the boat adversely. While many boat covers are available in the market, the best option is the custom fit boat cover. Rated high on the scale of customer satisfaction, they are designed for specific boat styles.

So, before venturing out for shopping for your custom fit cover, keep a few things in mind. First of all, you need to get exact and accurate measurements of your boat using a non- stretching tape. Look around you and do a survey of the fabrics most popular for boat covers. This will give you an idea of what to choose from. The popular range of options includes 50/50 polyester marine fabric or any soft fabric such as 100% waver polyester along a non-waver polyester back.

Choosing the right fabric for your customized boat cover is very essential because only a fabric with the required amount of strength and flexibility will be able to keep away the UV impacts, mildew and the prevent the process of rusting, which would set in the boat sooner or later because of its constant contact with water.

In France, Pierre Debroutelle came up with a prototype for an inflatable boat in 1934. The first boat of its kind to be certified by the French Navy, Zodiac's model probably sparked the development of the civil and military inflatable boat industry. Unlike its counterparts, the boat improved by Pierre Debroutelle in 1937 was actually designed in a U-shape, with the two lateral buoyancy chambers connected by a wooden transom patented on August 10, 1943. This version was the direct predecessor of today's inflatable sports and pleasure boats. Since then many new manufacturers, new models and new designs have hit the market.

A Personal Watercraft or Jetski could be considered generally as a one or two person motorbike for the sea. It is a small craft which is riden by its driver and/or passenger. They can accelerate quickly, move very fast through the water and have good manoevrability. This is all due to a powerful motor which drives an impellor to suck water into the jetski and then expel it through a directionally controlled nozzle. They are built to be very buoyant and therefore can be easily righted if they capsize. There are larger Jetskis available nowadays which seat three or four people. Many enthusiasts enjoy the exhilerating experience of riding them on the waves and even a beginner can learn to have alot of fun with these crafts within a very short time. There are now several established brands in the UK which range in price from about 5,000 up to over 10,000.

Jet boat engines come in two varieties inboard and outboard. Regardless of the type of motor, the jet system consumes about 30% of the engines horsepower while taking in the water and accelerating it out the back. A 50HP outboard fitted with a jet unit will make about 35HP at the nozzle. Other typical combinations you see are 25/20, 60/40, 90/65, 115/80, 150/105, and 200/140.

Tips About power watercraft

Building an inflatable boat is complex, and expensive and is best left to the professionals. Building your own boat will likely cost more than buying one and could prove to be a safety hazard as well. Insuring it or passing government inspections/regulations my be difficult also. Patterns for the sections of the inflatable collar are hard to get and it is unlikely a manufacturer will supply them or that a dealer would have them. However, if you really want to try, a dealer will likely sell you the fabric, glue, parts, etc.

If you are planning on buying a fishing boat then there are a wide variety of choices which depend on the type of fishing you are planning to do. If you require a boat to flyfish from in a resevoir or lake then the fisher range from MCA Boats may suit your needs. For sea fishing the Jeanneau Merry Fisher 625 or the Orkney range of boats with their more traditional shape could be considered. There are also larger boats like the Scanfisher. Larger seafishing boats are built with comfort in mind and therefore spacious outside areas and cockpits are provided along with well kitted out galleys and cabins.
